These mini sausage rolls are very common in Nigeria, it very delicious and it’s one of my favorite snacks. After I moved to the United State I realized it is called “pigs in a blanket” I was surprised but not so surprised…lol. Some countries have similar foods or snacks but different names and sometimes the procedure slightly differs.
It is an easy snack for kids and adults. If you don’t want to go through the mixing dough process you can opt for store-bought puff pastry or crescent rolls.
Sausage rolls can be rolled like crescent rolls or just wrap it straight and all around. You can use any brand of hot dogs/sausage of your choice. These sausage rolls are so good, and I made them from the scratch but if you don’t want any stress just buy the dough from the store as stated earlier.
You can use longer sausages and cut into mini or just buy the mini sausages. Let’s get started.
You might want to try;
- 2 1/4 Cups All-purpose flour
- 1 Pack Mini sausage
- ½ Cup Milk (1%,2% or any of choice)
- 6 Tablespoons Unsalted butter (cold)
- 2 Eggs (divided)
- 1 Tablespoon Sugar
- 1 Teaspoon Baking powder
- 1 Teaspoon Salt
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Prepare the baking sheet by lining with baking parchment and spray with baking spray or oil, then set aside.
In a medium bowl, whisk all the dry ingredients; flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt
Add the cold butter and mix thoroughly to combine.
Add one egg and mix until the mixture looks like crumbles.
Add the milk and mix to form a dough.
After forming a dough, break an egg in a small bowl, add about 1 tablespoon of water and whisk together, and set aside.
Cut out a small ball and use a rolling pin to roll out, place sausage and roll like 4-5 times (trim the ends if you have excess dough hanging), and place on the prepared baking sheet.
If you're using a longer sausage it's the same process. You can also make dough strips then roll-up.
Brush the end of the dough and seal. Place it on the prepared baking sheet and continue with the rest of the dough. Use a fork to poke the top of the roll and brush with egg wash (the egg and water mixture).
Bake in the preheated oven and bake for 35 minutes.
Let the sausage rolls cool down completely.
Serve and enjoy.
If you make strips it will look like this.
