It’s New Month! Hurray! We make to September! Happy New Month, Guys! I will be sharing shrimp yam balls with you today and I’m sorry I’ve not been posting as I normally do, I’ve been busy lately please bear with me! Back to the shrimp yam balls recipe, yam is a very popular food in Nigeria or Africa and it’s in season right now and people get to purchase in a cheaper now although, it’s very expensive here.
So, I want to share another way you could enjoy your yam. This recipe was made with shrimp, peppers, and onion but it is totally optional though recommended. You can make just yam balls without adding all these ingredients and still taste good. I coated them in the egg mixture and breadcrumbs, flour could be used too.
Breadcrumb is ideal for a crunchy texture if you’re flour you can still get the crunchy effect but you’d need to fry longer and you don’t want to fry too long. Let’s get started.

Egg Coated Fried Yam (Yamarita)
Yam and Plantain Porridge (Pottage)
Beans and Sweetcorn Pottage (Adalu)
- 1/2 Small Yam tuber (peeled, cubed and cooked with salt)
- 7 Pieces Shrimp (peeled, deveined, tails off and chopped)
- 1/4 Cup Red onions or your choice (chopped)
- 2 Green onions (chopped)
- 1 Small Habanero/Rodo (Deseed and chopped)
- A handful of chopped green pepper
- 1/2 Teaspoons Curry and thyme
- 3/4 Cup Breadcrumb or all-purpose flour (or more)
- 1 Egg plus a tablespoon of milk (whisked)
- Seasoning powder/cube (optional)
- Salt to taste
- Enough oil for frying
-
Peel the yam cut into cubed or rectangular, rinse very well, cooked with salt until the yam is soft. Drain and mash very well.
-
Clean the vegetables and all; onions, pepper, shrimps, and chop. The amount of the shrimp or the vegetables you're going to need will depend on how small or big your yam is, so adjust to whatever size you're cooking.
-
While the yam is cooking, add a small amount of oil into a saucepan or pot about 1 tablespoon of oil. saute the onion for a few seconds then add the green onion, habanero/rodo and green pepper. Season with thyme, curry, seasoning powder/cube if you're using then salt. Continue to cook for about 1-2 minutes then add the chopped shrimps for a few seconds. It won't take time since it was chopped. Remove from the heat and allow to cool down completely.
-
After the yam is done and drained. Mash the yam then add the shrimp mixture and combine. Scoop a small quantity and roll.
-
Whisk the egg and milk in a bowl (also set the breadcrumbs aside in a plate or ziplock bag) and drop the rolled yam into it to coat.
-
Roll the yam ball coated in the egg mixture into the breadcrumbs or flour if that's what you're using. Coat the yam balls as little or as much as you want.
-
Heat the oil to 360 degrees F and fry the coated shrimp yam balls, repeat the process and make sure you don't overfill the oil while frying also allows the oil to go back to the previous temperature before frying another batch or batches. Drain on a lined plate or baking sheet with paper towels.
-
Serve and enjoy!
