Pom pom rug is one of our summer craft to do and to say it is very easy to make is an understatement. It’s also super fun to make. Your little ones could also help out too. I made these with my babies and we all had fun while making them! All you need for this rug is yarn, scissors, non-slip mat, a marker if you need to make a circular rug, you’ll use the marker to trace the mat before cutting.
Although the pom pom rug is super easy to make, if you have small holes on your non-slip mat it would be a pain in the butt to thread the yarn on to it. So, get yourself a non-slip mat that has holes that you can thread on easily and make sure it not too big at the same time, just holes that are big enough to the yarn without too much stress.
For this rug, you could use paper towel roll (the long brown roll inside) or a round object, even your palm, fingers or paper cardboard. For small poms use a fork or fingers for the longer ones use your palm, paper rolls, a round object, after you’ve decided on which one to use make sure you roll the yarn loosely when rolling onto a fork, cardboard or whichever one you choose.
This rug could be used in your room, living room, for your pets, attached to a purse, and many more. make the rug as long as you desire. Mix match the colors, alternate, one color on one line, just play with colors. This is a good source for small side change if you desire to monetize it.
Let’s get started!

How To Sew Turban With Two Strands (DIY)
- Yarn; your choice of color or colors
- Scissor
- Non-slip mat (cut into your desired shapes; heart, circle, square)
- Paper towel roll/paper cardboard/fork/your fingers
-
Gather all the materials and roll out the yarn, don't pull from the middle to avoid tangling. If you're making pom pom rug in a circular form you'll need a marker or pen to make the shape on the non-slip mat. Cut your desired shape out of the non-slip mat.
-
If you're using paper towel roll, cut the roll into two and place together then roll the yarn around the rolls. The more yarn the fluffier your rug will be. So roll as much as you want; 60, 70, 80, 90 times are all ideal. You can combine two colors of yarn together you want to it in different colors or just one color at a time. If you're using 2 strands (2 different colors) together, 40 roll of yarn is good but you could roll more than that.
-
You could use your palm to roll the yarn if you don't have the paper rolls.
-
Also, paper cardboard could be used to roll the yarn. Cut an opening in between the small cardboard depending on how long you want the yarn.
-
If you want your pom small, use a fork, ensure to use the middle part of the fork, then cut a string and pull through the middle of the yarn (in between the fork) tie once to secure it then pull the yarn out.
-
Cut out a long string (longer than the yarn strands so you can easily see the strands used for tieing; about 10 inches depending on how puffy your yarn strands are) from the yarn and tie the rolled out yarn in the middle. Make sure you tie the string tightly to make your rug stay intact.
-
Cut both ends with a scissor. Don't cut the strand cut the loop only.
-
Pull the uneven ends if you have some that are shorter on one side then put everything together into a fist then trim.
-
Use the string (that you used to tie the middle) and thread it onto the non-slip rug then tie at the back. Trim off the excess yarn not too close to the knot.
Decide on one method you want to use.
-
Repeat the process until you have enough to cover your mat. For this pom pom rug, I used different colors just to showcase that you can use multiple colors or just two different colors.
-
I combined two different colors for this one. S, when I was rolling the yarn I used two different yarn together. For this one, palm, and the paper roll was used.
-
A fork was used for the rolling of this one.
-
It's very fluffy as you can see.
-
Have fun making these babies, be creative and use beautiful colors. Looking forward to seeing what you'll all make.
