Hello there! I hope everyone is doing great. I’m sharing with you today air fryer plantains, I’ve shared in the past how to fry or bake plantains so we are good on that note…lol. A lady reached out to me on Facebook to ask how to use an air fryer to make plantain which I had since shared with her. However, I want to share with y’all should in case anyone wants to know or doesn’t know you can use an air fryer to make plantains.
This recipe is very easy and similar to the baking method, the only difference is that you’re using an air fryer. I served the air fryer plantains with egg wafflette, recipe is available on the blog but there’s a difference because I used pepper, onions in these wafflettes, you can season it as you desire, I’ll also link it below to check the Wafflette Recipe out. You can use ripe, semi-ripe, or ripe plantains. I used ripe plantains so use whatever suits your need.
How to differentiate them, the green plantains are not ripe, if they’re a little bit yellow and hard, they are not ripe enough, if they are yellow and soft to touch not very soft then they’re ripe enough. If they’re too soft I don’t fry/bake/air fryer them, I add them to beans porridge.
However, if the plantains are too ripe (black peels) they might be too soft, they won’t hold very well, and will stick to the air fryer basket.
This recipe is the simplest thing to do, peel, season the plantains with salt if you desire ( I don’t add salt), spray, and cook in the air fryer. Easy, right? Let’s cook!

Ikpekere (Spicy Plantain Chips)
Stuffed Plantains With Caramelized Onions and Baked Fish
- Ripe plantains (cut edges, peeled, and sliced)
- Olive oil (or butter)
- Salt (optional)
-
Clean the plantains and use a sharp knife to cut off the edges. Slit down (run the knife down lengthwise) deep enough on the peel and not the flesh. Remove the peel and discard.
-
Slice the plantains into any shape of your choice. You can cut them into half then slice, you can dice, cut into rings size, and so on.
-
Preheat the air fryer to 375 degrees for 1-2 mins. Spray the basket with oil or brush with butter and line up the plantain slices (you can season with salt; I don’t use salt for my ripe plantains) inside the air fryer basket and cook for about 10-12minutes.
-
Flip and cook the other side for about 2 minutes. Note: the size of the size, thickness, hotness of the plantains determines the cooking time. So, the time might vary.
-
Remove and serve on a plate and enjoy. You can pair with egg, stew, egg sauce, rice, beans, or as is.

I served this with egg wafflette, and stew. All you need to do is crack your eggs and season the way you like.
-
Cook in a waffle maker, make sure you don't flip to cook the eggs until they're solid if not they'll drip and make a mess. I have a recipe for egg wafflette but I didn't use pepper I'll link the post if you'd like to check it out.
